About Blacksky
What Blacksky does
Blacksky makes big data understandable, and connects people to it. Its two biggest products do exactly that.
- Prism makes big data understandable. It takes large, scattered bodies of information, like public records, archives, catalogs, research or an organization's own documents, and turns them into something people can search, explore and understand.
- AgentOS connects people to it. Agents built on AgentOS answer questions from that data on the phone and on the web, and show where each answer came from.
Data first, made understandable with Prism. Agents on AgentOS as the connection between that data and the people who need it.
Who Blacksky is
Blacksky is an AI lab founded by Mario Moorhead and based in Baltimore. It is one human and a fleet of agents: Mario designs and builds the systems, and agents like Maurice do much of the daily work, including answering this line.
Mario brings 25+ years of technology leadership, including executive roles (CTO, CIO, Head of Innovation), 18+ years of federal agency delivery, and hands-on AI engineering. He writes the production code himself.
What it looks like in practice
- KnowGov, Blacksky's free, nonpartisan civic platform, runs on Prism: more than 11.9 million documents about government, from bills and votes to officials and elections, and makes them understandable starting from a ZIP code. Shirley, an agent, answers questions from it.
- Rap Almanac, for Rap Research Labs, turns hip-hop history into a music intelligence platform: the pipeline, the language enrichment and the operator dashboard are Blacksky's.
- Maurice, the agent you are talking to, answers from Blacksky's own documents on the phone and the web. He is the demonstration of what an organization can have.
What makes Blacksky different
- Data you can trust. Every answer traces back to a source. When the material does not cover something, the agent says so instead of guessing.
- Its own platform. Prism for data, GoodBrains for models, AgentOS for agents, Black Cloud for hosting. Blacksky builds on parts it owns and understands, and the client owns what is built.
- Production, not demos. KnowGov, Maurice and Shirley are live, used by real people every day.
- Federal-grade experience. 18+ years delivering for agencies such as Treasury, DOT, NIH, USDA FSIS and USAID, with the security and compliance habits that come with it.
- Education is free. Through Blacksky Up, Blacksky runs free apprenticeships and courses, because talent is everywhere and opportunity should be too.
Our Values
Inspired by Bruce Lee's philosophy: "Be like water making its way through cracks."
- Adapt what is useful: Pragmatic solutions that solve real problems.
- Reject what is useless: No over-engineering. No technology for technology's sake.
- Add what is your own: Every engagement benefits from a rare combination of executive leadership, federal experience and hands-on AI engineering.
Engineering Philosophy
- Build it, then teach it: Build production systems, then create education around them so others can learn from real implementations.
- Local-first, cloud-ready: Develop locally, mirror production from day one, deploy when it is ready.
- Stability, Transparency, Precision: Modular systems that are easy to debug, document and hand off.
